How To Write Better Undergraduate Essays Connect with other students who are writing on the same subject. We all know the internet is a massive source of information. Wading through all the nonsense is sometimes quite daunting. And when you want to hurry up and get this writing assignment done, you don’t want to waste time on unreliable sources. If the topic has not been assigned, think about the purpose of the essay. What do you want to do â€" persuade, inform, instruct? If you intend to educate your audience, you had better choose a topic on which you are well informed. If you are trying to persuade the readers, you’ll need to have at least a little enthusiasm for the subject. If you are writing a specific analysis, make sure your topic is…specific. Perhaps your paper exemplifies a larger thematic discussion or perhaps it should but that larger discussion doesn't exist yet. Either way, you can connect your discussion to others, demonstrating the larger importance of your specific argument. The last section of an essay is the conclusion. Conclusions need not be long arduous rearticulations of everything you've said. They can simply provide the final idea your paper leads up to . Will you be composing a general overview or a specific analysis? If you will be penning a general overview, you can probably scamper off to number two now. If you would like to try out this method, I have included the handout of guidelines that I give my students for essay resubmissions. An essay built on such logic will be harder to attack. If each separate argument fits tightly into an overall argument then attacking one idea means attacking them all. This is harder to do than criticizing discrete arguments that do not build on each other. You'll find that having some paragraphs before others just makes sense. Writing skills are one of the main abilities you’ll develop during your college years, from the first weeks to the very end of your degree programme. If you choose to rewrite the entire essay, please write a note to the teacher explaining why you started over and attach this note to your essay resubmission. Any targeted writing skill where the essay lost points on the rubric must be addressed through revision/editing/rewriting. If you have started with something too broad, narrow it down to a manageable subtopic. Determine which type of essay you are supposed to be writing. If you scored a 70 or lower, an essay resubmission is mandatory and a tutorial or visit to the writing center is required. Evidence â€" Again pretty self-explanatory, this is the stage in your paragraph where you provide evidence to back up your Point and Explanation. Now is the time to pull out your ammunition of carefully referenced sources to support your assertions that Your Point Is Important And Valid. This is because some ideas are more preliminary while others build on ideas that need to come before. To eliminate redundancy, every paragraph should advance the essay further than the last. As a segue, it bridges discussions in two different paragraphs. Pay special attention to grammar and punctuation. Simply highlight the main ideas â€" without restating them verbatim â€" and share your feelings one last time. A thesis statement has two parts; the first part states the topic and the second part states the point. The thesis statement tells the readers what the essay will be about. It will also give readers an idea as to what position you are taking.
